this road before with healthcare and stimulus where the democrats say there is a crisis. the date is looming and you must vote. you don't have an opportunity for the cbo to score a bill. you don't have the opportunity to read a bill, digest and debate a bill. there is a lot of procedure here that has yet to be done. we shouldn't vote on something that's a bad deal. this is a bad deal for the american people. the fact that the president is coming out not to announce a deal but to negotiate through the media is ridiculous. he should get in his car and go to capitol hill and meet with the members to craft a deal if he can. i think the president coming out to upon i if i kate and lecture and scold is not helpful to the process. rich these people are being brought out to stand behind the president when he makes his remarks. we have been given the 2-minute warning. we have seen the president do this before, bring in ordinary americans that would be impacted adversely were a deal not to be reached. we are expecting the president. his leadership on this issue, how would you grade it, dick? >> i grad

and reform entitlements looking at the health-care programs and retirement programs, to are under real stress -- which are under real stress. any plan has to look at all parts of the budget. the fiscal cliff is an across- the-board whack and that would put us back into recession. we can protect people that depend on these programs and so that we do raise significant revenues. we believe any plan has to be a bipartisan. it is about the country. it's interesting is how many people have stepped forward and saying to congress, stop making the situation worse. if you make the hard choices, the campaign to fix the debt will be there. a group of people are saying we support you in making hard choices. so far, we do not see that fix in place. there is real risk to the economy if we wait too long. host: you spend some time on wall street. the market was down on friday. could it happened this week? guest: anything could happen this week. the markets don't know what to make about what is going on on capitol hill. we do not know what kind of deal is going to come out of this. it seems impossible the deal

to see you. first time the president did a sunday talk show since 2009 since he was pushing healthcare reform trying to sell a fiscal cliff deal. he is was on meet the press. republicans weren't happy with that appearance because he they felt he was blaming them. new development in the last hour or two, vice president biden has come back from delaware. he is now here at the white house. he has had two phone calls with mitch mcconnell. in previous budget battles, joe biden has been the closer on these deals. his coming back from delaware might be a sign they are moving a little closer. that will be something to watch. the whole thing about changing cpi and reining in cost of entitlements, republicans are judging in on that. take a listen. >> one of proposals we made was something called change cpi but basically makes an adjustment in terms of how inflation is calculated on social security. highly unpopular among democrats not something supported but to strengthen social security in the long time i'm willing to make those decisions. >> reporter: in the morning, the president seemed to be
